We’re thrilled to announce that @Leisure Planner has been appointed to develop a new Recreation and Events Strategy! This plan will help guide future investments and upgrades for our Shire-managed sporting facilities, aiming to enhance both recreation and event spaces. The Draft Strategy will be ready by the end of September. Leisure Planner will start engaging with key stakeholders next week from August 11 – 16.

The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley would like to advise that the commencement of Stage 2 of the East Kimberley Regional Airport (EKRA) upgrades will be delayed. This postponement is due to several factors, including the extended timeframe required to finalise the agreement with the Growing Regional Program, resulting in the necessity for contractors to demobilise. Additionally, the upcoming Wet Season will adversely affect the project, shifting the construction to the start of the dry season next year.

The Shire is excited to announce that it has secured an additional $1.55 million in funding from LotteryWest, bringing the final project budget to an impressive $3.6 million, including contributions from the Shire.

The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley is delighted to announce that Stage 2 of the East Kimberley Regional Airport (EKRA) upgrades has received substantial funding to commence construction. This stage of the project will involve the extension of the runway and the development of associated infrastructure, significantly enhancing the airport’s capabilities and capacity.

A CONFIRMED estuarine (saltwater) crocodile has been reported in the Lake Kununurra crocodile control zone which extends along the Ord River from the Lake Argyle dam wall to the diversion dam at Lake Kununurra. A crocodile 1.5m - 2m was sighted approximately 600m upstream of the entrance to Lilly Creek lagoon on Saturday 23 March 2024.

The local government has received an application for a proposed telecommunication infrastructure (tower) at Lot 530 Research Station Road, Kununurra, and public comments are invited.

Council has endorsed a new policy regarding Shire Tree Removal. The policy provides direction to Shire Operations and ratepayers on the removal of Street Trees on the road verge, reserves or parks and gardens.

The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley would like to announce the initiation of the long-awaited replacement project for the swimming pools at the Kununurra Aquatic and Leisure Centre through a newly secured contract.

Public are advised to discontinue recreational activities at Lily Creek Lagoon for at least a week, until the Shire’s Environmental Health Services have confirmed that water quality has returned to acceptable levels and health warning signs are removed. There have been multiple wastewater overflows experienced in Kununurra over the last few days following ~ 275mm in Kununurra in March to date with further rainfall forecast.

The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley is urging residents and travellers within the region to take extra precautions to avoid mosquito bites over the coming weeks, to prevent mosquito-borne disease transmission.

The next phase of construction will focus on completing the Tickalara Creek and Frog Hollow Creek replacement bridges, with work scheduled to recommence on 18th March 2024. These final stages will involve the construction of approach slabs, embankment earthworks, and the installation of road safety barriers. Anticipated completion for both bridges is set for mid-June 2024.

Wet Season heavy rains has contributed to the increases in mosquitoes throughout the Shire. In Western Australia, mosquitoes can transmit Ross River virus, Barmah Forest virus and Kunjin virus, as well as the potentially fatal Murray Valley encephalitis and Japanese encephalitis viruses (JEV).
