The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley would like to announce the initiation of the long-awaited replacement project for the swimming pools at the Kununurra Aquatic and Leisure Centre through a newly secured contract.

The upcoming facility will feature a 25 metre 8 lane lap pool and a leisure pool, boasting amenities such as beach access, dedicated walking lanes and a learn-to-swim area. Additionally, it will include a toddlers pool, turbo channel and relaxation grotto. Ensuring accessibility for all, the pools will be disability-compliant with a universal ramp, accompanied by upgraded changerooms, and will incorporate a Changing Places change room facility.

Kimberley Green Constructions, a locally based firm renowned for its susbstantial experience in the region and similar projects, has been selected to undertake the construction.

Shire President, David Menzel, acknowledged that the redevelopment has been a long time coming, with Shire officers and Councillors working and advocating for the project since 2012.

He stated, “The Kununurra Aquatic and Leisure redevelopment stands as a crucial project for the Shire in terms of liveability and the wider Kimberley area for our visitor economy.”

“We are disappointed that despite our best efforts to secure adequate funding from State and Federal Governments, in the current financial landscape we have been forced to reduce the original scope of works around the delivery of a 50 metre pool.”

“The decision was not made lightly, and we understand the potential impact on some of our stakeholders. However, Council believe that it is important that we navigate these challenges responsibly while maintaining our commitment to deliver social and economic outcomes for the community.

Acknowledging the pressing concern over the high risk of catastrophic failures within the current pool, substantial resources have been allocated to resolve the impasse surrounding the delivery of the new facility. This upgraded facility, complete with essential infrastructure and amenities, aligns closely with community desires.

“I would like to acknowledge the Premier for his assistance in advocating for increased funding, enabling us to continue delivering a comprehensive leisure facility.”

Menzel also emphasised the significance of partnering with Kimberley Green Construction stating

“Having on board an experienced and local firm just adds to the scope and broad appeal of the project; to re-establish the centre as a real hub of community life.”
