On 15 March 2020, the State Government declared a State Emergency in respect to the COVID-19 virus. The WA Department of Health is designated as the Hazard Management Agency (HMA) and are liaising with all relevant bodies as nominated under the State Council.

The HMA has activated the State, District and Local Emergency Management Committees (LEMC). The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley, as the chair for LEMC in the East Kimberley, we would like to inform the community that we have activated our local LEMC team.

LEMC in the East Kimberley is comprised of 17 key agencies, including but not limited to Department of Health, WA Police, Department of Fire and Emergency Services, Department of Biosecurity, Observations and Attractions and the Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley. LEMC’s role in our Shire is essentially a planning and support role for incidents such as a human epidemics (COVID-19), bushfires, cyclones etc.

To date, LEMC has undertaken 4 meetings specifically related to COVID-19 and will continue to meet on a regular basis to plan our response.  Planning is taking place regarding the protection of our most vulnerable community members, ensuring supplies and services continue to all within the East Kimberley communities and management of volunteers wishing to assist during this incident. This planning is essential and informs both the operational response to the COVID-19 virus and the recovery phase of the pandemic.

The situation evolves on a daily basis; however, we have strong leadership and planning in place, which will assist us to get through this state emergency.
