The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley is delighted to announce that Stage 2 of the East Kimberley Regional Airport (EKRA) upgrades has received substantial funding to commence construction. This stage of the project will involve the extension of the runway and the development of associated infrastructure, significantly enhancing the airport’s capabilities and capacity.

The total cost for Stage 2 of the EKRA upgrades is estimated at $17.5 million - with Federal Government (Growing Regional Program) contributing $13.5 million, State Government providing $2.5 million, and the remaining $1.5 million funded by the Shire from the Airport Reserve.

Shire President David Menzel expressed his gratitude to both the Federal and State Governments for their significant contributions. He emphasised that such major infrastructure development is pivotal for the region’s growth and prosperity.

“We are extremely grateful for the support from both the Federal and State Governments. This investment will not only enhance our airport’s infrastructure but also unlock tremendous economic opportunities for our region,” Cr Menzel stated.

“The extension of the runway will improve our connectivity, support local businesses, and attract new investments, and provide a pathway to direct flights to the East Coast. I am really happy for our Shire Officers who worked hard on this application to be rewarded with this excellent outcome”.

The EKRA upgrade project is a strategic initiative aimed at boosting regional development, improving transportation infrastructure, and enhancing the overall accessibility of the East Kimberley region. It is essential infrastructure that underpins economic development.

The runway extension is expected to allow the larger B737 and A320 aircraft to operate at full capacity making it possible for more affordable airfares. The possibility for direct flights to the East Coast will provide more travel options for both residents of the East Kimberley as well as visitors to our region. Any increase in flight options and frequency will allow the Shire to provide better services for both passengers and freight operations.

The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley looks forward to the commencement of construction and the subsequent completion of Stage 2, which will mark a significant milestone in the region's infrastructure development.
