$34.7M Federal Funding Secured for Wyndham and Kununurra Projects

The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley has secured $34.7 million in Federal funding to deliver three major projects aimed at improving community infrastructure and liveability in Wyndham and Kununurra.

Deputy Shire President Tony Chafer expressed his gratitude for the Federal Government’s support and highlighted the importance of these projects for the community.

“We’ve listened to our residents and secured funding for projects that will enhance liveability in Kununurra and Wyndham and strengthen industries including tourism. These investments are vital to supporting the growth and resilience of our community. Appreciation should also go to our Shire staff whose work in developing the funding applications has enabled the Shire to deliver these projects to our community”.

Wyndham Community Hub
The Federal Government has committed $19.6 million through the Housing Support Program (Community Enabling Infrastructure stream) for the construction of a Wyndham Community Hub. This building will serve as a vital resource for the community, hosting a range of multifunctional spaces and sports facilities and will address critical infrastructure gaps, creating a centralised space that will strengthen social connection, promote health and wellbeing, and provide access to essential services.

The project responds to priorities identified in the Shire’s community engagement and will support Wyndham’s residents by providing improved access to a range of services.

Wyndham Boat Launching Facility
a further $13.2 million has been secured through the Growing Regions Program for the replacement of the Wyndham Community Boat Launching Facility. This long-awaited project will deliver safer, more accessible boat ramps and improved amenities, enhancing liveability and recreational opportunities for East Kimberley residents and visitors.

Kununurra Foreshore Masterplan
A $1.9 million grant from the Federal Regional Precincts and Partnerships Program will fund the development of a masterplan to guide improvements along the Kununurra Foreshore, from Swim Beach to the Rodeo Grounds. The project aims to build on the Shire’s Lake Kununurra Foreshore Plan to create vibrant public spaces that celebrate the Ord River and showcase the cultural heritage of the region.

The Foreshore Masterplan will complement the recently commenced Kununurra Town Centre Revitalisation project, ensuring integrated and community-focused outcomes. It will also provide a foundation to advocate for further funding and investment from government and the private sector.

First Point of Entry – Wyndham Port

The approval of expanded border services at Wyndham Port marks a significant milestone for the East Kimberley, enabling goods subject to biosecurity and other controls to be imported and exported directly through the region. This decision will allow for more efficient international shipping, reducing costs and improving productivity for local businesses and industries.

These changes will:

  • Strengthen local supply chains, including for emerging clean energy and green fuel projects.
  • Create new employment opportunities and drive economic growth in the East Kimberley.
  • Support the development of the agricultural, resources, and tourism sectors by cutting transport costs for businesses.

The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley welcomes this transformative investment in Wyndham Port, which will unlock significant economic opportunities for our region. These developments reflect a shared commitment to supporting local businesses, creating jobs, and ensuring the East Kimberley continues to thrive as a hub for innovation and growth.

“These investments represent a significant opportunity for Wyndham and Kununurra. They’re the result of strong partnerships with Traditional Owners MG Corporation and Balanggarra Aboriginal Corporation, community stakeholders, and all levels of government. Together, we’re building a brighter, more connected, and inclusive future for our region”.

The Shire is eager to move forward with these transformative projects and will continue working closely with the community to ensure their successful delivery.
